Primary Purpose:

 

Pasadena ISD was awarded a Truancy Prevention and Intervention grant from the Texas Office of the Governor-Criminal Justice Division. The grant will allow PISD to employ two Juvenile Case Managers to provide specialized support services to students at risk for truancy at participating high schools through a “capture and connect” approach. The project will target 9th and 10th grade students throughout the school year and provide a summer program for incoming ninth graders who are at risk of chronic absenteeism. Through the grant, the Juvenile Case Manager will identify the needs and/or missing skills that prevent regular school attendance and offer supports, connection, and skill-building to help students achieve academic success and develop positive relations with adults over the school year.

 

 

Qualifications: Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Administration/Counseling/Behavioral/Mental Health/Social Work/Law Enforcement or related field or Associate's degree with at least 5 years of work-related experience
  • Must have a valid TX State Driver's license

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Bilingual - English/Spanish (Required)  

Experience

  • Knowledge of and experience working with at-risk youth, truancy programs, and/or court system
  • Knowledge of compulsory attendance laws and strategies to resolving truancy, excessive absences and tardiness problems
  • Ability to serve as district liaison to parents, law enforcement agencies and court personnel

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Implement and comply with state and district policies regarding attendance and truancy
  • Communicate compulsory attendance laws and school policy to parents and students
  • Investigate cases of unexcused and excessive absences and tardies and connect students to district and campus support programs
  • Work closely with teachers, counselors, principals, other school staff, students, and guardians to identify problems of tardiness, attendance and student truancy
  • Regularly counsel students and guardians who are at risk of dropping out
  • Establish and maintain needed supports for students in matters of attendance and tardiness; make a reasonable effort to gain their cooperation to improve attendance and student outcomes
  • Conduct home visits and parent conferences on student truancy and attendance problems
  • Conduct initial student assessments to identify barriers to attendance and develop intervention and prevention plans aimed at increasing attendance and school outcomes
  • Regularly monitor student’s data on case load, problem solve solutions and maintain communication with all stakeholders
  • Compile, maintain and file all physical and computerized reports, records and other documents required including records of all cases investigated and reports required by state and district policy
  • Comply with all district policy and procedures
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, students and parents
  • Maintain confidentiality concerning student and/or families with all persons other than authorized persons or agencies
  • Other duties as assigned
