Primary Purpose:

 

Assist Pasadena ISD and the Region 4 Regional Day School Program for the Deaf (RDSPD) by providing students with specially designed instruction and instruction aligned to grade level standards based on students' individual education plans in general and/or special education settings.

 

Qualifications:

      Education/Certification

  • TEA Teacher Certifiation requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from accredited university
  • Valid Texas Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing certification
  • Valid Texas Assessment of Sign Communication certification(Preferred)
  • BEI or RID Interpreter Certification (Preferred)

      Special Knowledge / Skills

  • Demonstrate knowledge of hearing loss and its impact on students' educational, social, and emotional development
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the IEP process, including evaluations, multidisciplinary approaches, goal setting, and implementation
  • Demonstrate general knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Demonstrate general knowledge of Universal Design of Learning principles and differentiated instruction
  • Demonstrate knowledge general knowledge of assistive listening technologies as it relates to students who are deaf and hard of hearing
  • Demonstrate ability to read and interpret evaluation  and assessment results (i.e. audio-grams, state assessments, etc.)
  • Demonstrate effective collaboration and facilitation skills

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Collaborate with students, parents, campus, and district staff to provide  high-quality specially designed instruction for students who are deaf and hard of hearing
  2. Implement an instructional or skill development program for assigned students and provide written evidence of preparation as necessary
  3. Plan and use appropriate instructional / learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect accommodations and/or modifications for individual needs of students assigned
  4. Collaborate with general education teachers to accommodate and /or modify general education curriculum as needed for maximum student participation
  5. Conduct formal and informal assessment and use results to inform instruction 
  6. Prepare for Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee meetings by

 

              a. Updating existing IEPs

              b. Administering criterion-referenced or curriculum-based assessments according

                 to special education department procedures

              c. Completing present levels of academic and functional performance (PLAAFP)

              d. Drafting accommodations and/or modifications for general education instruction

              e. Drafting new IEP goals and objectives to send home to parents for review

              f. completing eligibility-specific paperwork, i.e. communication supplement,                           RDSPD supplement, etc.

 

      7.  Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee meetings by:

              a .Attending as the teacher for the deaf representative

              b. Explaining and discussing the students' IEP goals and objectives, proposed

                 class schedule, accommodations and/or modifications, and supplemental aids

                 and services

              c. Providing information regarding state assessment performance and

                 recommendations 

             d. Collaborating on transition goals and activities as needed

 

      8. After the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee meeting:

              a. Distribute IEP paperwork to all teachers who will be responsible for

                  implementing accommodations and modifications for the student

              b. Provide and utilize supplemental aids and services as determined by the ARD

                  Committee

              c.Implement the students' IEP

              d. Provide written evidence of student growth toward IEP goals and objectives

                  by completing progress reports

 

      9. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the IEP

    10. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with the needs

          and capabilities of each student assigned utilizing technology when appropriate

    11. Create a classroom enviroment conducive to learning and appropriate to the

          physical, social and emotional development of students

    12. Manage student behavior and administer discipline, including non-verbal crisis

          intervention and physical restraint of students according to IEP

    13. Consult with general education teachers and other staff (i.e.paraprofessionals,

          audiologist, occupational and physical therapists, interpreters, etc.)

    14. Proactively seek parent support and input by: 

                a.Communicating with parents concerning the needs, problems, and progress of

                    their child

                b Assisting parents in contacting other community agencies which may provide

                   services for their child

                c. Documenting formal and significant informal parent / teacher conferences,

                    contact with other agencies, or professionals concerning individual students

                d. Contacting parents when problems arise with personal equipment

  1. Troubleshoot and maintain auditory equipment, contacting the educational audiologist when problems arise, and train general education teachers regarding their use
  2. Maintain confidentiality of student records and information discussing issues only with the educational team responsible for the student’s educational program
  3. Attend all required district, campus, and Region 4 RDSPD meetings and trainings
  4. Comply with all Region 4 RDSPD, campus, and district policies
  5. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor / principal

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise assigned instructional paraprofessionals and assist in the supervision of assigned student teachers/ interns and/or volunteers

Mental Demands:

Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); ability to instruct; maintain emotional control under stress.

Physical Demands / Environmental Factors:

Frequent standing; stooping; bending; kneeling; pushing and pulling; possible heavy lifting of students. Biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases; exposure to students who may display violent behavior
